Do you get more excited about your veganniversary than your birthday? Ever thought, “There should be a song for veganniversaries”? Well, now there is!
“Happy Veganniversary” is MC Pony’s latest musical offering. A song all about celebrating the date an individual went vegan, “Happy Veganniversary” bounces along with the adorable zest only novelty vegan hip hop can provide. Bursting with positivity, the song comes complete with a music video featuring rescue animals at Edgar’s Mission farm sanctuary.
Don’t know the date you went vegan? Don’t sweat it! Take a wild guess, or as MC Pony suggests, be symbolic and choose November 1st – World Vegan Day. Knowing the exact date you went vegan isn’t super important, but celebrating your veganism definitely is. And what better way to celebrate than with music – and maybe a slice of Veganniversary cake.
“Unashamedly vegan”, MC Pony is a character created in 2008 by singer and animal rights blogger, Elizabeth Usher. MC Pony performs novelty hip hop as a platform for spreading the word about animal rights and other issues close to Usher’s heart. MC Pony began performing in 2009 and has since performed at various public and private events, including Sydney’s Cruelty Free Festival.
“Happy Veganniversary” is MC Pony’s first official single release, and features the vocals of both Elizabeth Usher and Renée Jonas.
“Back in February 2014 I thought it would be great to have a celebratory anthem that could be played to mark the occasion of someone’s veganniversary – the anniversary of the date they went vegan!” says Usher in a blog post.
“I had a bit of an idea for a chorus melody and decided to approach Ralph Graham, who had recently set up the Facebook group “Sydney Vegans Making Music”, to see if he would be interested in co-writing the song. Fortunately he thought it was a decent idea, and we’ve spent many many sessions since then writing and re-writing the idea.”
An earlier version of “Happy Veganniversary” was unveiled at the Sydney Vegan Expo in May 2015, but Usher and Graham have since tweaked the track for its official release. The final track was produced by Usher along with Andrew Covell, whose credits also include programming, engineering, guitars and bass.
Mastered by Kathy Naunton of dB Mastering, and after an eighteen-month “birthing period”, “Happy Veganniversary” was finally launched with a party at Newtown’s Lentil As Anything.
If there’s anything music needs more of, it’s veganism, and as MC Pony has shown, every voice has its purpose. It just so happens that veganism and novelty hip hop go hand-in-hand. While veganniversaries as a concept are nothing new, its soundtrack certainly is. Congratulations MC Pony for adding some much-needed light and lyricism to every vegan’s veganniversary!
Don’t forget – sharing is caring! If the veganniversary of someone you know is coming up, spread the good vibes and send them the link to “Happy Veganniversary”!
